What is Gobs O'Phun? Exactly what your audience and guests will have as they relax and enjoy their libations while listening to traditional folksongs of Ireland and Scotland. The flavor may be celtic, but the songs are well received by all cultural backgrounds. The high-energy performance by this group leaves your audience with pleasant memories of a good, wholesome evening of fun.
Gobs O'Phun is composed of three dynamic lads influenced primarily by the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. They are a family group made up of brothers Denis and Tim Sullivan and their brother-in-law, Martin Lambuth. "Gob" is slang in Ireland and Scotland for your mouth, and these three are primarily a vocal band. All three sing and all three engage in humorous banter, adlibbing jokes with one another and the audience. Martin plays guitar and an occasional harmonica (be sure to request the "Gobs O'Phun Bagpipe" which was originally called "Bagmonica", until the Clinton scandal). Denis plays the bodhran (an Irish drum... his cohorts call him the moron on the bodhran, which should give you a clue as to the pronunciation), and Tim plays the bones (2 flat sticks) and will torture the band with a banjo from time to time. An endearing quality of the band is the enjoyment people get from watching Tim gesture the lyrics of the songs. The "Gobs" offer entertaining antics and a smattering of a cappella renditions, their powerful voices, animation and light humor will draw your crowd in with strong harmonies and a hand-clappin', foot-stompin' repertoire. With a personal touch, they go out to tables during our breaks to shake hands, meet people, talk about the music and gather special requests.
What does Gobs O'Phun have to offer? Exactly what the name implies, lots of fun! Many of their songs are robust, fast-paced and humorous, sprinkled with a few love songs, historic rebel songs and ballads. Your audience will have gobs (that's lots, not mouths) of fun listening and singing along. Guests are welcomed as they enter the "Gob Zone" and feel like a part of the festivities and more importantly, part of the family. It's as warm and fuzzy as an Irish sweater or a Scottish kilt. Many people extend their visit in anticipation of the next set. Beer flows from the taps as the lyrical melodies flow from their gobs.
They also have a following. It increases every time they open their gobs. With each engagement, requests to be on their mailing list grows. Each mailing notifies interested patrons that they can have Gobs O'Phun at your pub or festival.
"Gobs O'Phun" is "lots of fun." They are an entertaining and engaging musical act, not a laid-back, sissy-instrumental, listen-only band. They interact with the audience, inciting laughter, sing-alongs, clapping, good-natured heckling and camaraderie.
Gobs O'Phun isn't jigs and reels, bagpipes or symphonic sound. They perform in
a polished, homespun rawness that is inviting and pleasurable. The Gobs musically further the oral traditions of century-old folksongs from primarily Ireland and Scotland, as well as Newfoundland, Australia and England.
Gobs O'Phun appeals to a broad range of demographics from pre-schoolers, toddlers, youngsters, teens, young adults, twenty-somethings, thirty-somethings, and middle-aged adults through senior citizens, playing from churches to pubs. Many people that are not of Irish/Scottish heritage enjoy the Gobs O'Phun performances.
Gobs O'Phun songs include drinking songs, ballads, historical accounts, love songs, humorous tunes, sea chanteys and more.
Gobs O'Phun is the perfect choice for clubs, benefits, private parties, wedding receptions, birthdays, festivals and special events.
