What started out as a family pastime soon grew into a hobby that became very popular every March 17th with St. Patrick's Day celebrations. Gobs O'Phun was able to parlay their annual appeal into a year-round venture, performing on a regular basis at pubs, festivals, church events and private functions.

The "Gobs" are all natives of Pueblo, Colorado. It started in the early seventies as an informal pastime of a large Irish family (10 kids!), when Denis Sullivan and older brother Jim learned many of the songs from their parish priest, Father O'Shaugnessy. They moved beyond the living room performing a capella in Denver, Connecticut and New York. Martin Lambuth married into the family in 1978 and began accompanying the vocalists on guitar. In the absence of Denis and Jim, the youngest of the Sullivan brothers, Tim, joined forces with Martin. The two have been singing together since 1992. Denis moved back to Denver in 1994, joined up with Tim and Martin, and that was when the band became known as Gobs O'Phun. The Gobs have a unique harmony style which does not follow conventional assigned parts. Their performance is a "robust flavored, full-bodied hop, harmoniously blended from selected Irish and Scottish ditties". Their sound has been compared to the Clancy Brothers. Their casual style, interaction with the audience, self-deprecating humor and improvised stage antics and banter have earned them a regular following of fans whom chuckle, laugh, clap, stomp their feet, sing along and leave having fully experienced gobs of fun! Their biggest supporter is Tim and Denis' mother, and Martin's mother-in-law, Mrs. Jeannette Sullivan. They refer to her as the "world's oldest roadie". She turned 80 in 2001 and still follows them from gig to gig, always insisting to help carry equipment. Even during the hectic pace of a St. Patrick's season, her energy outlasts that of the band. As Peter Jones noted in an article in Life on Capital Hill, "Their history reads like a Bing Crosby musical".

After keeping their talents confined to family gatherings, the Gobs went public in 1994, auditioning for a one-night stand for St. Patrick's Day at Finnegan's Pub in the Adams Mark Hotel in Denver. Their audition led to an offer not only for St. Patrick's Day, but to become the house band, performing two to three times every weekend for nearly a year and a half! Their wildly enthusiastic patrons at the pub frequently refused to let the Gobs go home until they'd sing "just one more song." The Adam's Mark (out-of-state, corporate office) razed Finnegan's in favor of a sports/disco venue to be consistent with other Adam's Mark properties. Gobs O'Phun then became the house band at The Kilt and Candle in Littleton, Colorado, for close to a year and a half. But, in what appeared to be a disconcerting trend, The Kilt turned into more of a sports bar, replacing the stage with pool tables and dart boards. In 1999, the Gobs have found a home at Clancy's Irish Pub in Wheat ridge, Colorado, performing twice a month on first and third Saturdays. They like to say, "Come join us as we fill our gobs with song, you fill your gobs with food and drink, and we'll have a smile on every gob in the house!"

The Gobs have become known as THE Irish/Scottish pub band in County Denver. Since 1994, they have made consecutive annual appearances at the Swallow Hill Music Association annual fundraiser, "Folkathon" (now called the Swallow Hill Folk Festival) and the Colorado Irish Festival. They have also played at Denver's First Night Colorado and Mile High Hooleys, Leadville Boom Days, and numerous other Denver area venues including the Wynkoop Brewing Co., Brendan's Market St. Pub, Nallen's, Sheabeen, Druids Arms, The Cherry Cricket, Old Chicago, Streets of London Pub, Mc Donough's and the hardware department at Sears. Since 1998,

Gobs O'Phun has been on KEZW Radio for a live half-hour show for St. Patrick's Day mornings, and been featured on KUSA Channel 9 morning news spots. They can be found in pubs all over Colorado (and as Tim says, "We may even be singing in some of them."), having performed in Denver, Boulder, Louisville, Black Hawk (we are the ONLY band that plays at Fitzgerald's Casino), Genesee, Cordillera, Leadville, Keystone, Pueblo, Colorado Springs and coming soon to Estes Park.

In March of 2000, Gobs O'Phun held their first concert in Tuft Theater at the new Swallow Hill location. They sold-out (125+) and many people were turned away, so they were offered another concert on March 16, 2001 in Swallow Hill's larger venue, Daniels Hall, which also sold out (310+)! With the new millennium, and to establish themselves as an evolving group, Gobs O'Phun has ventured into performing some of their own original songs, but relative to the theme of their repertoire.

Gobs O'Phun's schedule includes inaugural appearances at two other festivals in 2001, the River Run Celtic Festival in Keystone (June) and Long's Peak Scottish/Irish Festival in Estes Park (Sept.). These are significant milestones for the lads, having opened for SEVEN NATIONS in Keystone and probably the biggest kudos to date will be opening the Friday and Saturday evening concerts for internationally renowned Celtic celebrities, SEAMUS KENNEDY and ALEX BEATON in Estes Park, as well as being on the festival field for three days!

Gobs O'Phun has produced two live performance cassettes "The Swallow Hill Sampler" and "Nectar of the Gobs". They also have three CDs. In January 2000, they released two new CDs recorded live at Clancy's Irish Pub in Wheat Ridge. The first one is a collection of Celtic drinking songs titled, "Liverdance: A Collection of Celtic Drinking Songs" (18 songs). The second is a collection of historical, Irish rebel tunes titled, "These Gobs Are Revolting: A Collection of Historical Rebel Tunes" (18 songs). They released a third CD in March 2001, "Major Phun's Loyal Hearts Pub Band", which is a collection of 26 of the most requested pub favorites (yes, by the title you can gather the cover art is a parody of Sgt. Pepper's). Each CD is produced independently, one at a time by the band members (Thatched Cottage Industries). After original art is completed by band member, Martin, each CD goes through four hands-on stages to complete.
